Introduction

Free end interlinked fingerweaving is formed by linkinging each strand with its adjacent strands. This interlinking results in the the strand forming a spiral. The interlinked spirals allows the resulting fabric to be stretched from side to side exposing its net-like structure. The spiral can be either an [S] spiral or a [Z] spiral.

[NOTE] The fabric structure achieved by free end interlinked fingerweaving can be formed in several different additional ways.
    Example:
    • Nalbinding, uses a needle to add a single strand to the side of the fabric.
    • Sprang weaving, uses a frame to support the weaving. Sprang weaving is worked from both ends toward the middle.
This set of tutorials will present instructions for both [S] and [Z] twist interlinked fingerweaving.

Also instructions for workig in both directions, (left to right and right to left) will be included.

Identifying Interlinked weaving
`

Interlinked woven fabric can be stretched accross it width. This stretching reveals the over two under two configuration of the weave.

[alternating pattern]
In interlinked woven fabric there is an alternating pattern produced by the way the strands turn back into the workpiece. On one pass of weaving a singel strand either turns under or emerges at the edge. On the second pass two strands turn under or emerges at the edge.

[NOTE] Interlinked woven fabrics does not have warp and weft strands.

Headstick Configurations
[figure 1]

Interlinked fingerweaving makes use of two different headstick configurations.
  • Headstick Configuration figure [1] shows the first strand on the left hand side of the headstick in the bottom layer of the shed and the first strand on the right hand side in the top layer of the shed.
[figure 2]
  • Headstick Configuration figure [2] shows the first strand on the left hand side of the headstick in the top layer of the shed and the first strand on the right hand side in the bottom layer of the shed.
