Warpface Fingerweaving Lightning Pattern
(-- variations -- Color)
The basic lightning pattern requires two colors; one color for the background and a contrasting color for the lightning stroke. However, variations in the appearance of the basic lightning patter can be achieved by introducing a third color. The third color can be introduced in several ways:
  • Additional colors can be introduced by substituting an additional color for all or part of either the background color or the lightning color.

  • Aditional warp strands of a third color can be added to the lightning color pattern configuration.

  • [NOTE] For each of the following tutorials, the starting arrangement of the warp strands on the headstick is: 10 background color, 12 lightning color, and 10 background color.

Row 1, First Interlock ---- Work from left to right

Select the first warp strand on the left hand side of the work-piece as the first part of row 1 weft strand.

Pass the weft strand through the open shed to the sixth warp strand from the left hand edge of the lightning color warp strand band.

Start the first row 1 interlock by folding the first part of the weft strand up over the sixth lightning color warp strand.

Secure the interlock in place by placing the first part of the weft strand in the bottom layer of the shed.

When the first part of weft strand is placed in the bottom layer of the shed it becomes a warp strand and the sixth lightning color warp strand becomes the next segment of the row 1 weft strand.

Row 1, second interlock

Pass the second part of the row 1 weft strand through the open shed to the sixth warp strand of the right hand background color band.

Start the second row 1 interlock by folding the second part of the row 1 weft strand up over the sixth warp strand of the right hand side background color band.

Secure the second interlock in place by placing the part 2 weft strand in the bottom layer of the shed.

When the part 2 weft strand is placed in the bottom layer of the shed it becomes a warp strand and the sixth background color warp strand becomes the part 3 segment of the weft strand.

Row 1, end weaving

Pass the row 1 part 3 weft strand through the open shed to the right hand edge of the work-piece.

Secure the part 3 weft strand in place by placing the part 3 weft strand in the top layer of the shed.

When the part 3 weft strand is placed in the top layer of the shed it becomes a warp strand.

Transfer the shed to the index finger of the right hand.

[NOTE] picking up the next bottom layer warp strand and placing it in the top layer can help keep the strand in the over under cofiguration when the shed is reversed.

[NOTE] The interlocks in the additional rows are made between the weft strands and the warp strands that are adjacent to the interlocks in the previous row. For more information

[NOTE] When the sixth row of weaving is completed the first segment of the lightning pattern is completed.

This compiletes the first segment of the lightning pattern.

[OBSERVE] The configuration of the warp strands is now the same as the beginning configuration.

[NOTE] The steps for weaving the basic lightning pattern are described in part one of this tutorial.

[In variation 1] The sequence of colors changed so that in one segment of the lightning pattern the sequence of colors was [background color, lightning color 1, lightning color 2, background color]
In the next segment of the lightning pattern the sequence of the colors was [background color, lightning color 2, lightning color 1, background color].

[In variation 2] The sequence of colors stays the same throughout the work-piece. This is achieved by adding a third interlock/fourth segment to the weft strand.

[NOTE] Row 2 has three interlocks and four segments in the weft strand.

[NOTE] Each row 2 interlock is formed by passing a segment of the weft strand through the shed to an interlock of the previous row and folding weft strand up over the warp strand that is adjacent to the interlock of the previous row.

Continue adding additional rows of weaving.

[NOTE] When the sixth row of weaving is completed the first segment of the lightning pattern is completed.

[OBSERVE] The configuration of the warp strands;
The sequence of the colors of the warp strand has not changed. This is due to the third interlock.

The lightning patter of adjacent lightning bolts is achieved by adding a second set of 12 strands of a new color to the basic configuration. For this part of the tutorial, the headstick configuration is set up similar to the configuration used for previous parts of this tutorial.
The configuration of the warp strands for the adjacent lightning bolt is:
      10 background color strands,
      12 lightning strands (color 1),
      12 lightning strands (color2),
      10 background color strands.

[NOTE] The starting headstick configuration used here is achieved by increasing the number of warp strands to the first interlock of the basic headstick configuration.
