Warpface Fingerweaving Lightning Pattern
(-- variations -- Adjacent)
The basic lightning pattern requires two colors; one color for the background and a contrasting color for the lightning stroke. However, variations in the appearance of the basic lightning patter can be achieved by introducing a third color. The third color can be introduced in several ways:
  • Additional colors can be introduced by substituting an additional color for all or part of either the background color or the lightning color.

  • Aditional warp strands of a third color can be added to the lightning color pattern configuration.

  • [NOTE] For the following tutorials, the starting arrangement of the warp strands on the headstick is: 10 background color, 12 lightning color(1), 12 lightning color(2), and 10 background color.

The lightning patter of adjacent lightning bolts is achieved by adding a second set of 12 strands of a new color to the basic configuration. For this part of the tutorial, the headstick configuration is set up similar to the configuration used for previous parts of this tutorial.
The configuration of the warp strands for the adjacent lightning bolt is:
      10 background color strands,
      12 lightning strands (color 1),
      12 lightning strands (color2),
      10 background color strands.

[NOTE] The starting headstick configuration used here is achieved by increasing the number of warp strands to the first interlock of the basic headstick configuration.

Row 1, first interlock.

Select the first warp strand on the left hand side of the work piece as the part 1 row 1 weft strand.

Pass the part 1 row 1 weft strand through the open shed to the eighth warp strand of the first lightning color band.

Start the first interlock of row 1 by folding the part 1 row 1 weft strand up over the eighth warp strand of the first lightning color band..

Secure the row 1 first interlock in place by placing the part 1 row 1 weft strand in the bottom layer of the shed.

When the part 1 row 1 weft strand is placed in the bottom layer of the shed it becomes a warp strand and the eighth warp strand of the first lightning bolt becomes the part 2 row 1 weft strand.

Row 1, second interlock.

Pass the part 2 row1 weft strand through the open shed to the eighth warp strand of the second lightning color band.

Start the second interlock of row 1 by folding the part 2 row 1 weft strand up over the eighth warp strand of the second lightning color band.

Secure the row 1 second interlock in place by placing the part 2 row 1 weft strand in the bottom layer of the shed.

When the part 2 row 1 weft strand is placed in the bottom layer of the shed it becomes a warp strand and the eighth warp strand of the second lightning band becomes the part 3 row 1 weft strand.

Row 1, third interlock.

Pass the part 3 row 1 weft strand through the open shed to the eighth warp strand of the right hand side background color band.

Start the interlock by folding the weft strand up over the eighth warp strand.

Secure the third interlock of row 1 by placing the part 3 row 1 weft strand in the bottom layer of the shed.

When the part 3 row 1 weft strand is placed in the bottom layer of the shed it becomes a strand and the eighth warp strand of the right hand background band becomes the the fourth part of the row 1 weft strand.

Row 1, end weaving

Complete the weaving of row 1.

Pass the part 4 row 1 weft strand through the shed to the right hand side edge of the work piece.

Secure the row of weaving by placing the part 4 row 1 weft strand in the top layer of the shed.

When the part 4 row 1 weft strand is placed in the top layer of the shed it becomes a warp strand.

Row 1, reverse the shed.

[NOTE] Maintain the under/over configuration. Be sure that the warp strands remain parallel.

Row 1, set weave

Set the weave by pulling the layers of the shed in opposite directions.

Check indivual warp strands to see that they are pulled snug and even.

This completes row one. This also sets the location of the weft strand interlocks in the following rows of the lightning pattern.

Row 2

Add the next row of weaving.

[NOTE] Row 2 follows the same sequence of steps as row one. It also has three interlocks in the weft strand

Continue adding additional rows of weaving.

[NOTE] When the eighth row of weaving is completed the first segment of the adjacent lightning bolts pattern is completed.

Continue adding additional segments until the workpiece has reached the desired length.
